The African Women's Media Center, a project of the International Women's Media Foundation, was founded in 1997. Located in Dakar, Senegal, and directed by an advisory committee of African women in the media, the center is a continent-wide organisation working with and on behalf of African women in the media. The AWMC's online media directory features more than 200 media companies, non-governmental organisations and journalism education programmes in Sub Saharan Africa.

Named after Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article XIX works worldwide to combat censorship by promoting freedom of expression and access to official information. It aims to do so by monitoring, researching, publishing, lobbying, campaigning and litigating on behalf of freedom of expression wherever it is threatened. They publish online activity reports, publications, and the Freedom of Expression Handbook.

Its objective is to contribute to the democratisation processes by promoting freedom of information, pluriformity of the news supply and opinion forming in the developing world. CPJ (Committee to Protect Journalists)

The Committee is a non-partisan, non-profit organisation which was founded in 1981 to monitor abuses against the press and promote press freedom around the world. By publicly revealing abuses against the press and by acting on behalf of imprisoned and threatened journalists, the CPJ effectively aims to warn journalists and news organisations where attacks on press freedom are occurring. The CPJ also publishes articles and news releases, special reports an annual report on attacks against the press around the world, all of which are available online.

The web site is a valuable source of information on conflicts and conflict prevention and peacebuilding world-wide. The web site hosts surveys of 63 conflicts around the world, stories of efforts by non-state actors to prevent or resolve conflicts, profiles and contact details of international and local organisations working to prevent or resolve conflicts, references to publications on conflict prevention. It has a special focus on literature produced by NGOs and research institutes, information on events, conferences and campaigns focusing on conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

The IFEX web site provides an extensive collection of links, subdivided along various topics concerning media, freedom of expression, and human rights. The web site contains an archive of freedom of expression alerts and the weekly Newsletter, Communiqué. Moreover, IFEX's web site provides a list and extensive descriptions of member organisation active in the field of media and peacebuilding. These organisations sometimes have few resources and thus IFEX also acts as their platform to the world.

Next to an organisational profile, the web site provides information on its different activities worldwide. The web sites of the various regional Internews offices can be accessed through links on the main web site offering more specific information on regional activities. Moreover, Internews provides the latest news related to their activities and projects. Since September 11th they have had a special section on Media Peace and War which includes analyses, reports, and commentary on media and war and peace issues, with a focus on how open media promote peace and understanding.

The IPI works from the idea that freedom of expression is the right that protects all other rights and that this freedom needs to be promoted and defended. The freemedia web site provides up-to-date media related stories and links to the latest IPI events. Next to various IPI publications and reports it also contains a weekly-updated news bulletin with information on press freedom monitoring. Moreover, the site has an extensive link section to web sites of related organisations.

IRIN news

The site of the Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN), part of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is an extensive information resource on humanitarian topics, including peacebuilding. The network provides reports on Sub-Sahara Africa and recently also on Central Asia. IRIN enhances news with further analysis and details of essential interest to the humanitarian and disaster-relief community. For example summaries of relevant UN and NGO reports, among others, are often included in IRIN reports with information on how to access the original document.

Media Action International is a Swiss based NGO that aims to bridge the gap between journalism and humanitarian, post-conflict and development activities. The site offers information about its projects and publications and field guides to humanitarian and conflict zones, especially Afghanistan.

RSF is a journalist advocacy association working for freedom of the press worldwide and the safety of all journalists. They monitor press freedom violations and keep track of journalist casualties, murders and imprisonment. The Reporting the World web site provides a forum with the latest discussions on the ethics of journalism and aims to act as a journalism think-tank. It has electronic versions of the Reporting the World findings book and transcripts of several seminars it has organised.

Search for Common Ground (SFCG)
