The Media Center Belgrade is active in media initiatives in the region. The main focus is to play an active role in the media transition process, the drafting of media laws and the training of journalists in democracy related subjects. The Center is an umbrella organisation for independent media and media organisations and has adopted “committed professionalism” as its mission statement. The Center encourages the improvement of professional standards and practices of journalism, as well as the democratisation of the media.

Transition Process in the Media Sphere

The OSCE Mission in Kosovo forms a distinct component of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) with media affairs, including independent media support, regulations, laws and standards, media monitoring, and Radio-TV Kosovo, as one objective. The mission contributes to the creation of conditions that support freedom of the press and freedom of information in Kosovo by promoting the development of media through, training and technical assistance, cooperative inter-agency projects and the recruitment of management and staff for public media. OSCE has temporary responsibility for the regulation and licensing of the media in Kosovo. It also works with the media Policy Advisory Board to develop laws and standards for the media. The OSCE Mission also provides analysis of media activity in Kosovo.
