The IJC was established with the vision
of evolving and sustaining highly skilled and knowledgeable media professionals
who will work to ensure the sustenance of democratic ideals and human development.
The organisation’s activities include training of working and prospective
journalists, research into contemporary media issues, media documentation,
publishing and implementation of media projects that contribute to uplifting
the rural folks across Nigeria. The IJC works towards the achievement of the
following objectives the acquisition of better technical and professional
skills by journalists and media practitioners, a better environment for democracy
and press freedom to thrive, the emergence of a broad based, diverse, vibrant
and courageous mass media, a greater involvement of the media in the struggle
to attain better living standards and human development, and a greater involvement
of the media in the promotion of international understanding.

The Institute for Media and Society
(IMS) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation based in
Nigeria. The IMS facilitates the expansion process of media and communication
resources to marginalised sections of the country. It builds the communication
capacity of the media, civil society and governance institutions to facilitate
popular participation in democracy and development in Nigeria. The institute’s
mandate is to build the capacity of the media to become an informed, innovative,
competitive, critical, plural and knowledge-creating institution, which effectively
performs its roles in democracy and development and provides an appropriate
interface for civil society and governance.
