(a) Civic Development Media Support Research and Analysis

CIMERA works on the development of the civil society in the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Balkans, combining projects on governance with research activities. It focuses on media development by enhancing the professional skills of journalists. It also organises cross-border cooperation among journalists, politicians, and policy experts. By encouraging collaboration among professionals in areas with conflict potential, and simultaneously confronting participants with a variety of viewpoints, CIMERA works to increase understanding of the fears and hopes of all parties, and to reduce the potential for conflict.

(b) Fondation Hirondelle

Founded on the assumption  that independent media have a fundamental role, particularly in authoritarian, non-democratic societies, Fondation Hirondelle works to establish an independent media in situations where conflict is endemic, where there are open hostilities, or in post-conflict regions. It is also present in situations where the political, economic or social conditions are difficult for actors working in the development field. The Foundation has set up radio stations and a news agency, which aim to be close to the people by broadcasting and working in local languages. It hopes to contribute to the development of public opinion, which is responsible, civic-minded and open to dialogue and it places particular emphasis on justice as a factor leading to reconciliation. Hirondelle adheres to the recommendations of the UNESCO Round Table on the media in conflict and post-conflict regions.

Media Action International

Media Action International is an international NGO, which aims to promote the more effective use of the media to help local populations in crises. MAI’s ultimate aim is to offer benchmark standards in the use of needs-based media through media programmes, publications, videos and their web site. They manage field-based media projects in conflict areas and organise workshops, seminars and conferences on journalism, conflict and peacebuilding. MAI aims to bridge the gap between journalism and humanitarian, post-conflict and development activities and works from this position to develop strategies to make the best use of the mass media. It also seeks to strengthen the role of credible information in humanitarian, peacekeeping, civil society-building, human rights, environment and development initiatives.
